MODEL #5 [SYNAGOGUES]: MONTH-LONG SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE

Example: HAR ZION TEMPLE, PENN VALLEY, PENNSYLVANIA [October 19-November 18]
I. Ongoing/weekly Programs
  • Starbucks classes [5 sessions]: "The Majesty and Wisdom of the Mishna B'rura: The Greatest Jewish Legal Code of the 20th Century" -- "outreach program" at Montgomery Ave. Starbucks; attendance at Wednesday 10am grew from 7 people at the first session, then 12, 18, 22, 26]

  • Parashat HaShavua [4 sessions]--weekly Torah portion to largely Men's Club group Friday mornings after services -- utilization of numerous "engagement" techniques, including Internet videos of Cave of Machpeila and Rachel's Grave, staging Genesis chapter 27 as a play, bringing ladder to class to illustrate Jacob's dream, etc.

  • Shabbat afternoon [3 sessions] -- study of "Me'ma'amakim: Responsa From the Kovno Ghetto"

  • Hebrew High School [3 sessions] -- Sunday morning sessions on: : "Past 2,000 Years of Jewish History Including the History of Israel", "What Did American Jewry Do For the Jews of the Holocaust--power point", and "Confronting Bullying From a Jewish Perspective and Other High School Issues"

  • Teacher Training [5 sessions] -- meetings with faculty from the Preschool and Elementary School Departments; discussion of their roles as Jewish educators; with Talmudic texts

  • Junior Congregation [4 sessions] --Shabbat morning dramatic presentations of Jewish stories relating to the Parsha

  • Preschool Shabbat Celebrations [3 sessions] --dressing up in costume as Rabbi Noah and Avraham; visiting each of the 12 preschool classes to introduce the Biblical characters

II. Home Hospitality Study Programs
  • Six daytime and evening programs hosted at the homes of congregants on a topic of their choosing, including: "Living By Jewish Values or How To Be a Mentsh", "The Greatest Stories From the Talmud", "Taking the Next Step: How to Strengthen Our Jewish Commitment", "From the '60's In Our 60's: Dealing With Life's Transitions"--approximately 100 congregants participated

III. Special Programs
  • "Encouraging Intimacy: Jewish Marital Sexuality" --Friday evening presentation for Men's Club couples; studying of classical Jewish texts--75 participants

  • "Ten Things You Didn't Know About the Month of Kislev/November"--Shabbat Mevarchim program with source book--80 participants

  • "Global Day of Jewish Learning in Honor of Rabbi Steinzaltz" --community-wide session; taught selections from the Stensaltz Talmud to advanced class--45 participants

  • "Thanks To the Congregation"--a Friday evening interactive "Thank You" built around the weekly Torah portion--125 participants

  • Har Zion Temple Clergy and Senior Staff Meeting-- discussion of congregational issues through lens of classical texts--6 professionals
